New mobilities of migration in Galicia (2010-2014)

Emilia García López, Head of Foreign Affairs of the Council for Galician Culture, Santiago de Compostela, ES

In recent years, the impact of the crisis, there was a change of Galician migration cycle. Earlier this century, during the period of economic growth, the arrival of immigrants (foreign or "returnees") starred in the social, media and political discourse, and became the focus of research about mobilities in Galicia. However, the impact of the crisis involved a growing interest in changing migratory cycle and now puts the focus on new outflows of Galician citizens abroad.

Currently the Council of Galician Culture is working on a project to put numbers but also seeks to provide a voice to the leads of this phenomenon that has important social, cultural and political implications.

The objectives of this presentation are the new migratory movements, their type and the attitudes that generates. This requires a multidisciplinary work among geographers, anthropologists and sociologists.

Behind the numbers of Spanish citizens who are currently out of Galicia, very different social realities are hidden: young Galicians who seek a job abroad; foreign-born immigrants, naturalized, who return to their countries or are packing to settle in other economically more prosperous places; Galician returnees (those who were migrants in their day, or their descendants, who returned to Galicia attracted to the era of prosperity) and returning to their former emigration countries (Switzerland, Germany, Argentina), students and other mobilities (border, circular migration back and forth).

This most important aim of this project is the study of political and social challenges that involve these new movements for the Galician society.
